What could change for Codex at OpenAI DevDay 2026?

Just a random guess before Dev Day. Aside from whatever new stuff they announce, like hardware, AI assistants, or anything else, I'm only talking about the current Codex situation.

New $500 pro max plan = for niche, intensive dev users only. Maybe they'll do that, but it won't solve anything for the much larger group of regular users, who make up most of the numbers and drive the comments and overall mood.

Major upgrade to the current model = basically admitting that gpt-6, which was released just one week ago, is a failure. They won't do that. Giving us a new mini astra would just make things more complicated. You'd just use 6 sol for that, it's already cheaper. And gpt-6 luna is basically unlimited. Maybe they could do some patch updates, but that's it.

Only give the chatbot gpt-6 sol = actually a downgrade, it already feels cheaper but less capable than 5.6 sol. They'll definitely do this. But if plus users get pushed down into trash tiers, I think at $20, people are already switching sides.

The only real win for both customers and the devs is increasing the base usage. Yes, it's already cheaper, but they could give you even more usage without making people cry for a reset. I mean, if you want a better model, you can use astra and you have more base usage for that.

Another win would be to give plus users gpt-6 astra in the chatbot with limits like the current pro plan, and give pro users more in the chatbot. Yes, of course, they'll still separate chatbot and codex usage like they do now. Because they could push selling cloud storage later.

If they start putting usage limits on the chatbot, then there's really no reason for people to stay here. At $20, the other side is just way better. But they don't. People should stop guessing about this.
